Westfield La Maquinista
La Maquinista, located in the Sant Andreu district, is one of Barcelona’s main shopping centres. Our intervention focused on refurbishing its facilities in order to reactivate and revitalise its commercial activity.
The refurbishment works were carried out over a period of 14 months without interrupting the shopping centre’s activity, with the challenge of ensuring the safety of users and workers at all times. The intervention covered an area of 9,000 m² and included vertical circulation spaces, retail units, roofs, façades and access points to the complex.

Enhancing the shopping centre’s food and beverage area
The entire upper floor of the complex was refurbished to accommodate the food court, significantly expanding and upgrading the previous offer.

Improving the visitor's experience
Through more open and accessible spaces, with improved internal mobility allowing visitor flow across all levels of the shopping centre.

Creating flexible and functional retail units
The intervention prepared the retail units so that each operator can configure them according to their specific requirements.
The installation of a lightweight roofing system
- The existing roofs were replaced with a system of large-scale structural canopies, maintaining the open character of the space while providing weather protection and natural light.
The reorganisation of vertical circulation flows
- To improve connectivity between the levels with commercial programmes and the first floor, where the shopping centre’s food and beverage offer is located and has been enhanced.
Reconfiguring spaces and mobility in an operational shopping centre
- A key element of the new spatial organisation was the relocation of an existing footbridge to a new position, contributing to improved mobility and a more efficient reorganisation of shared spaces.
