Terrat Viu is a 7,100 m² green space located on the roof of the Fòrum Building, home to the Natural Science Museum of Barcelona. Inaugurated in the summer of 2020, the roof is integrated into the visitor route and activities of the facility, providing a space to experiment with and study the most suitable plant species for sustainable green roofs in Barcelona.

The project involved the repair, maintenance, renaturalisation and environmental improvement of the existing roof of the museum building, which previously hosted the 2004 Forum of Cultures. Our intervention made possible what is currently the largest green roof in the city, featuring three Mediterranean meadows and three wild freshwater ponds.

We have brought to fruition

Improvement of the building’s environmental and climatic performance

  • The new waterproofing system provides improved thermal insulation and therefore a more energy-efficient operation of the building. The works were carried out while the building remained in use, under significant access, load and logistical constraints.
  • The intervention was carried out across the entire roof area, covering more than 13,000 m², with a renaturalised surface area of 7,100 m².
  • Incorporation of construction solutions enabling urban biodiversity planting and environmental management of the space.
  • A central reception area with a large planter featuring different plant typologies.
  • Three meadows with diverse plantings.
  • Permanent freshwater ponds with various plant species.
