Cardoner Aigua, advances the implementation of emergency plans at four reservoirs in Catalonia
The works strengthen hydraulic safety at the La Baells, La Llosa del Cavall, Foix and Darnius-Boadella reservoirs.
Throughout 2025, Cardoner has carried out a series of works to implement emergency plans at four strategic reservoirs in Catalonia: La Baells, La Llosa del Cavall, Foix and Darnius-Boadella. The projects, now approaching completion, are aimed at enhancing the safety of downstream populations and improving response capacity in emergency situations.
The works have included the installation of population warning systems consisting of 27 sirens, each 11 metres high, distributed along the Llobregat, Cardener and Muga river basins, many of them located in areas with difficult access. In parallel, refurbishment and upgrading works have been carried out on existing buildings associated with the reservoirs, including offices, administrative buildings, workshops and emergency control rooms, while ensuring uninterrupted operation of the facilities.
The projects incorporate redundant communication systems to ensure the reliability of alerts in critical situations, as well as autonomous power solutions based on photovoltaic panels and battery storage. Sustainability criteria have also been applied, prioritising the reuse of existing buildings and improving the energy efficiency of the refurbished facilities.
The works have been commissioned by the Agència Catalana de l’Aigua (ACA), as the promoting public authority, and have been executed under a joint venture formed by Cardoner.
